We are delighted to present a fantastic series of practical, hands-on workshops at this year’s Fair. Each one has a very limited number of places, allowing you to try something totally new or improve on an existing skill whilst making friends and having fun.  Take a look at the timetable below to see what’s on offer.

Workshops are priced at £8 or £14 for 1 hour or 1.5 hours respectively. We advise booking your workshop in advance as these were extremely popular last year and we cannot guarantee that any unsold advance workshop tickets will be available at the Fair.  You will also need a valid entry ticket for the appropriate day. Bookings can be made via the Book Tickets link – simply navigate directly to the ‘Workshops’ tab in the menu.

Block print a calico shopping bag

Block print a unique calico shopping bag using Indian wooden printing blocks. You will print with fabric paints on a pre-made cotton calico shopping bag using basic pattern theory. The theme will be Indian elephants, peacocks and paisley. Learn how to apply the paint successfully, how to get reliable results and how to care for your wooden blocks. The opportunity will be given for you to try a practice piece first.

Big stitch, thick thread hand quilting

Hand stitching is having a huge revival as more and more people discover how relaxing it can be. In this workshop you will learn about how to hand quilt using a thicker 12 Perle cotton. Hand quilting uses running stitches to hold three layers of white cotton, wadding and cotton muslin together. Using a thicker thread means that your stitches will be larger and your stitching will grow much faster. You will be taught how to transfer designs and mark cotton fabric, how to start and end your running stitches and which needles are best to use with thicker threads. Angela will also talk about the huge variety of threads on the market that can be used for hand quilting. You will also be given instructions on how to turn your stitching into a cushion after the workshop.

Applique Masterclass

Working with templates you will cover the basics of creating applique and then spend time practicing that all important top stitching! Applique is a lot of fun, just remember that most shapes have a lot of twists, corners and turns, so sewing machine control is important, if you are a beginner, don’t expect the shape to be perfect and you will be fine. Practice does make perfect. Skills covered: cutting and applying bondaweb (fabric glue) to own shapes, practising the top stitching and reverse applique.

Kantha work is a hand stitching technique which is over 5000 years old. It uses a running stitch to create representational images. This workshop is suitable for all abilities and will teach you how to stitch a beautiful flower in a frame using this traditional technique with cotton 12 Perle thread. You will learn how to first tack cotton and muslin together, how to start and finish your cotton threads, how to stitch a running stitch, whipped running stitch and finally how to mount your work onto the front of an A6 greeting card.

Peg loom weaving

In this workshop you will learn the skill of peg loom weaving to create a cozy neck scarf. The technique is easy to learn and can be managed by adults and children. The peg loom comprises of a wooden base into which wooden dowelling pegs fit into holes in the base. You will learn how to set up the peg loom by threading the pegs to create the ‘warp’ threads. Once the pegs are threaded you will start to weave the ‘weft’ rows. You will be amazed at how quickly your scarf grows. In your workshop kit you will be provided with the yarn and full instructions. Peg looms will be provided for you to use in the workshop.

Quick Strippy Cushion with applique

Students will be provided with a variety of strips of fabrics which will be sewn together to form the background and raw edge applique technique for the flower of this quick, easy and very effective cushion. This is a really fun project. As well as piecing a little free motion sewing will be introduced for the detail on the flower. A simple envelope back will complete the project. Soutache Jewellery

Soutache is traditional embroidery using special double cord called soutache and variety of beads, pearls or crystals. Soutache can be curved and shaped into many patterns because it is essentially a textile. Embellished knitwear

This bang-on trend never fails to get compliments when worn! Even men are now enjoying embellished jumpers. Using a choice of colours you will learn how to transform jumpers, scarves and hats with large hand-embroidery and Swiss darning methods. After designing on paper, you will be shown four stitches. You will also learn about texture and wool weights necessary to obtain a stunning effect.

Workshops are presented as described by the individual tutors.
